Background Story

Rwanda is an active member of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an intergovernmental organization that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future. IRENA serves as the principal platform for international co-operation, a center of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. Rwanda as a member state, highly benefits from the vast network created within the agency. IRENA’s work is to make initiatives, project facilitations and share knowledge, data, and statistics for member states. Amb. John Mirenge presented his credential letter to Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency as Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to IRENA on 16 October 2023, replacing Amb. Emmanuel Hategeka, who served as Rwanda’s first Permanent Representative to IRENA from May 3, 2021. 

Rwanda served as the 14th Assembly President of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) for 2024. Rwanda also served as a council member representing the African group for the 2023/2024 period.
